Every horse owner wishes for a content and healthy horse. When the animal is sick, we suffer along and become deeply concerned. For many of the common horse illnesses, there is an underlying cause that we can address:

TOXINS IN THE ORGANISM

Just like us humans, our horses are exposed to an increasing amount of toxins - environmental pollutants like pesticides and heavy metals. This can lead to an overload of the body's detoxification mechanisms. Similar to the human body, the horse's organism also has its own detoxification system. The liver, kidneys, intestines, respiration, skin, and hooves as appendages of the skin all play a role in ridding the body of toxins.

Together, they work to rid the body of harmful substances. When a large amount of toxins enters the body at once or if the detoxification system is disrupted, toxins remain in the body and accumulate in the organism. Deposited toxins cause cell damage throughout the body, affecting cell functions. They weaken the immune system, disrupt the balance of the intestinal flora, and attack nerves and muscles. Common horse diseases such as colic, pastern dermatitis, laminitis, respiratory problems, allergies, skin eczema, eye inflammations, and joint issues originate from toxins that are stored in the body.

COMMON HORSE DISEASES

The spectrum of horse diseases is broad. Here's an overview of some typical diseases:

COLIC

Colic causes the horse to have spasmodic abdominal pain. Colic itself is not a disease but a symptom of a digestive tract disorder. It can be life-threatening.

SCRATCHES

Scratches (also known as tension eczema) is a bacterial inflammation of the skin in the fetlock fold. Microbes enter through defects in the skin barrier, leading to inflammation.

LAMINITIS

Laminitis is a very painful inflammation of the laminae of the hoof. The laminae connect the hoof bone to the hoof capsule. As a result of the inflammation, there is severe swelling under the hoof capsule, causing significant pressure pain. Additionally, blood circulation in the hoof is impaired.

COUGHING

Coughing can be acute or chronic. Acute coughing is caused by a bacterial or viral infection of the respiratory tract. Chronic coughing is a non-infectious disease of the lower respiratory tract. Even though horses with chronic coughing often only cough during cantering, they are significantly restricted in their lung function and performance. Possible causes include fungal spores in hay or straw, lungworm infestation, or an allergy.

ARTHRISIS

Arthritis is a chronic joint inflammation. The horse experiences pain and lameness. It primarily affects older horses, ponies, and sport horses subjected to heavy strain.

SUMMER ECZEMA

Summer Eczema is an allergic reaction to substances in the saliva of certain biting insects. Affected animals suffer from intense itching. Severe rubbing at the itchy skin areas can lead to hair loss or skin infections.

RECURRING OCULAR INFLAMMATION

Recurrent Ocular Inflammation (also known as Moon Blindness) is an inflammation of the vascular layer in the eye. The inflammation recurs in bouts and can lead to blindness.

COMBATING TOXINS - PREVENTING DISEASES

The cause of many diseases in our horses is an excessive burden of toxins. By relieving the detoxification system of the animals, you can prevent diseases. There are two things you can do:

  1. You can try to reduce the sources of poisoning.
  2. You can support your animal's body in getting rid of toxins with detoxifying supplements.

WHAT ARE THE SOURCES OF POISONING?

Horses are exposed to various sources of poisoning. If too many of them act together, the body's own detoxification system reaches its limits, and not all toxins can be eliminated. Therefore, it makes sense to identify the sources of poisoning and ensure that horses are exposed to as few toxins as possible in their care.

  • Toxins in Grass and Forage
Toxic plants like ragwort, lily of the valley, horsetail, or autumn crocus can be found in fresh grass as well as in hay and straw. Tansy ragwort, in particular, is highly toxic, a fungus that can infect grasses and cereals.
  • Molds and Bacteria in Hay
Hay that is not adequately dried is a breeding ground for microorganisms such as mold and bacteria, which harm horse health. Mycotoxins, produced by molds, particularly burden the liver and kidneys.
  • Aflatoxins in Horse Feed
Aflatoxins are potent toxins produced by certain types of molds. Oilseeds, maize, wheat, and rolled oats are often contaminated. Toxins often form when feed is stored improperly.
  • Pesticides in Feeds
Various pesticides are used in the cultivation of cereals, herbs, meadows, and fruit, which can be toxic to horses. Pesticides can contaminate many feeds. While there are maximum allowable limits for individual toxins, it is not known what effects the combination of several toxins in one feed has on the horse's body.
  • Heavy Metals in Water
In some regions, drinking water contains high concentrations of heavy metals. Some of them are harmful to health, such as lead, cadmium, copper, nickel, mercury, and zinc. The body's own detoxification system cannot effectively eliminate heavy metals, so they are stored in the organism.
  • Digestive Disorders
A diet that is too high in fructans, sugar, or starch leads to digestive disorders. This has the consequence that the intestinal mucosa is damaged. Moreover, the intestinal flora changes, and many intestinal bacteria die. When intestinal bacteria decay, endotoxins are produced. Since the damaged intestinal mucosa can no longer fulfill its protective function, these toxins enter the horse's body.
  • Metabolic Disorders and Infections
Metabolic disorders such as Equine Cushing's Syndrome (ECS), viral infections, or bacterial infections lead to an accumulation of metabolic toxins, which burden the body's own detoxification system.
  • Medications
Medications, antibiotics, and vaccinations help the body deal with diseases or prevent them but also burden the detoxification organs.

SIGNS OF AN OVERBURDENED DETOXIFICATION SYSTEM

These symptoms can indicate that the body's own detoxification system is overwhelmed and unable to eliminate toxins adequately on its own.

  • Weight issues:
    Unexplained weight gain or loss
  • Digestive problems:
    Runny stool, diarrhea, foul-smelling feces
  • Lethargy:
    Frequent yawning, decreased performance
  • Skin problems:
    Summer eczema, skin fungus
  • Poor hooves:
Insufficient growth, cracks, broken hooves, hoof wall separations
  • Issues during coat shedding:
Winter coat not shedding or shedding incompletely, itching, bald spots
  • Metabolic disorders:
For example, Cushing's disease, laminitis, Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS)

How can I detoxify my horse?

If your horse is showing such symptoms, detoxification is recommended. You can detoxify through its diet. A detoxification regimen will boost the elimination of toxins, purify the blood, and strengthen the immune system. Various plants are known for their detoxifying effects, such as nettles, dandelion, or goldenrod.

But be cautious: Some of these plants can be toxic when overdosed. So, feed a balanced dietary supplement with a safe formula. Even if your horse is not showing alarming symptoms and is healthy, regular detoxification regimens are possible and beneficial. By supporting the horse's natural detoxification system, you relieve the detoxification organs and strengthen the organism. This reduces susceptibility to diseases and promotes active health care.
